Croatia traffic law

New Traffic Law entered into force since 5. June 2014. Croatian government introduced new measures for safety on the roads which are quite restrictive.

Croatian government justified this traffic law by saying it had to take radical measures in order to stop the rising death toll on Croatian roads.

Stricter regulations were also introduced for other traffic violations.

For example for exceeding the speed limit you can pay a fine up to 15.000 kn (around 2000 Euros) or for driving under the influence of alcohol you will pay same amount or spend up to 60 days in jail.

Croatia Speed limits:

In populated areas:

  • Maximum alowed speed is 50km/h
  • Maximum Speed tolerance is 10%

Fines for speeding in populated areas:

  • Speeding to 10 km/h: 300kn (around 40 euros)
  • Speeding for 10-20 km/h: 500kn (around 70 euros)
  • Speeding for 20-30 km/h: 1000kn (around 135 euros)
  • Speeding for 30-50 km/h: 2000kn (around 275 EUR)
  • Speeding for over 50 km/h: 5000-15000kn (690-2069 EUR) or up to 60 days in jail

Croatia Speed limits outside populated areas:

  • Maximum allowed speed on freeways is 130 km/h
  • Maximum allowed speed on motorways is 110 km/h
  • Maximum allowed speed on other type of roads is 90 km/h
  • Speed tolerance is 10%

  • Speeding to 10 km/h: 300kn (around 40 euros)
  • Speeding for 10-30 km/h: 500kn (around 70 euros)
  • Speeding for 30-50 km/h: 1000kn (around 135 euros)
  • Speeding for over 50 km/h: 3000-7000kn (415-970 Euros)

Fines for driving under influence of alcohol or drugs:

Maximum alowed amount of alcohol in your blood is 0,05% and fines for driving under influence of alcohol depending on that percentage:

  • 0,050-0,100 %: 1000-2000 kn (around 140-275 Euros)
  • 0,100-0,150 %: 2000-5000 kn (around 275-700 Euros)
  • from 0,150% or above: 5000-15000 kn (around 700- 2070 Euros)
  • for driving under influence of drugs: 5000-15000 kn (around 700- 2070 Euros) or up to 60 days in jail

Other Croatia speed limits and traffic law restrictions:

  • Lights have to be turned on during the day only in winter daylight saving time
  • mandatory seat belts
  • usage of cell phones while driving is not alowed
  • child car seats are obligated for all childern under age of 5
  • all children in age between 5 and 12 years old are obligated to be driven in the back seat

If case that you pay a fine immediately when you committed traffic violation you can get 50% discount.

It is not necessary to have money with you, the discount can be achieved if you pay with payment slip in nearest post office.
